CAN WA and the Shire of Brookton modernise history

Alt

Pioneer trails, plaques and statues across towns in the Wheatbelt have been constructed over the years to inform adults and history buffs of a townships history.

Yet one Wheatbelt town is taking the plunge to modernise history! The Shire of Brookton, a town located in the Southern Wheatbelt, has teamed up with CAN WA to tell the tale of Brookton’s history, with students armed with stenciling and spray-painting skills, they are making their mark.

Urban artist Darren Hutchens is teaching the students from Brookton District High School how to create images to make up the heritage trail, with everyone making their own awesome name stencils as a quick and easy way to learn the tricks of designing stencils. The young people involved have also had visits from the local historical society and a Brookton Elder, to learn more about the town they live in and consequently inform their urban art making.

The Brookton Stencil trail will take you around 6 sites in Brookton for a 3km casual stroll. The stencils tell both the Noongar and European history, including stories about the founder of Brookton, the Old Mile Pool swimming hole, local plants and animals, plus more!

The trail will be finished by December 8, so if you’re passing through Brookton make sure to check it out, and maybe you can convince your local council to use urban art to tell the story of your own town too!

CAN WA, IASKA & C.Y O'Connor Institute partnership yields socially engaged art in Narrogin

Alt

On Friday the 28th of October I attended the public launch of the IASKA Spaced - Art out of Place Narrogin project. Polish architect Kuba Szczesny, curator Kaja Pawelek and documentary filmmaker Matylda Salajewska have been immersing themselves in the Narrogin community through a collaborative contemporary arts program over the year.

At the launch the artists presented a model of their proposed Narrogin Banksia Tower and accompanying short film portraying their time in Narrogin. The film featured excerpts of a Dryandra welcoming cultural experience organised by CAN WA's Geri Hayden.

The Banksia Tower model – which involved a giant display of illuminated fibre panels – received a mixed reaction from the community. Some thought it was incredible and bold, others thought it looked like a giant car wash machine! Jan from IASKA and the artists were extremely pleased with the event attracting quite a crowd.

To view and keep track of the project's progress visit the IASKA website.

CAN WA's doll making workshop: a hit at the Wardarnji Festival

Alt

Narrogin's Noongar doll making skills were proudly on display at this years Wardarnji Aboriginal Arts and Cultural Festival in Fremantle on Saturday 26th November. Wardarnji celebrates Indigenous culture and the arts in the beautiful grounds of the Fremantle Arts Centre.

Three doll makers, including CAN WA's Arts and Cultural Trainee Sonia Kickett, were on hand for a CAN WA workshop to show festival goers how to create their very own hand crafted doll.

Doll makers Leanne and Senema Kickett were blown away by the interest in the workshops and they spent much of the day guiding participants - young and old - through the doll making process.

All three doll makers at Wardandji currently have works on display at the Western Australian Museum in the Yarns of the Heart exhibition, alongside over seventy other handmade dolls created by the Noongar community of the Southern Wheatbelt, made during CAN WA workshops held between 1994 and 2011.

Make sure you don't miss out on seeing this terrific exhibition over the Christmas holidays, which is on until the 31st January 2012.

Artist seeking a space to create in!

Alt

“I am seeking a space in the Karratha/Roebourne area for a period in the new year to undertake an art process that will ultimately be translated to sculpture.

It would be great to be in contact with, or accommodated by, a local artist, and/or rent a small space for a short stay.

I am seeking 1- 2 weeks while undertaking the project and will also seek during this time conversations and exchanges with local Ngarluma artists.

This may enable an Indigenous artist's work to be translated to screening elements on a new building in the area.

Some images of my works are attached and my website is www.lorennagrant.com"

COMMUNITY ART PROJECT SHOWCASE: The adventures of the Socking Bird at the Beaufort Street Festival!

Alt

Wendy Herington isn’t your average community artist. She rounds up keen knitters… to create large-scale works of wonder and beauty…. from you wait for it… recycled socks!

Wendy has been experimenting with her innovative knitting practice for a number of years. Amongst other projects, she has worked with a variety of groups to make sock yarn hats and baskets, but has always wanted to take the idea to a much larger scale, and to a community art event.

Her latest work, The Socking Bird, claimed centre stage for the ‘Beaks on Beaufort’ art installation at this year’s Beaufort Street Festival. The piece reached a whopping 5.8 metres in height and knocked the (socks) off the thousands who walked by – in fact, people fell so much in love with the Socking Bird that by the end of the day, her feathers were more than a bit ruffled up from all the enthusiastic hugs she received from passers-by!

Several months leading up to the launch of the Socking Bird, Wendy and her team of volunteers, known as “Team Wendy”, met every Thursday where a process of making the bird was developed - knitting and crocheting the sock yarn using large, oversized needles and crochet hooks. This began with the overwhelming task of sorting and colour-separating the socks, cutting them into rings and joining the rings to make the yarn.

This special yarn became the narrative of the Socking Bird, and along with the bits of old furniture, electrical cable and masonite board making up the bird’s structure and cage, the Socking Bird was brought to life.  Elaine from Beaufort Street store Behind the Monkey wrote about ‘Beaks on Beaufort’; “The loveliest part of all this has been the total sense of community that has surfaced and is so apparent.  Artists, non artists, old, young, men and women all involved and working with donated materials, time and energy into what promises to be a major art project.  It really is a very nice, feel-good vibe!”

To see more of Wendy’s work, head down to Fremantle Art’s Centre upcoming Bazaar market on 2 – 4th Dec, where you’ll be able to purchase her handmade wares.
